World Bicycle Relief: Project CHAI

Introduction
CHAI's Work
World Bicycle Relief/CHAI Projects

Introduction

World Bicycle Relief in support of CHAI – the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative – provided 300 bicycles to people across six different countries to help specific HIV/AIDS initiatives in Africa. The bicycles were provided to healthcare workers addressing medical needs of people living with HIV/AIDS, mentors working with orphans and vulnerable children, and educators teaching disease prevention. In all cases, the efforts of the bicycle recipients will be multiplied by increased mobility.

CHAI's Work

The Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative strives to make treatment for HIV/AIDS more affordable, and to implement large-scale integrated care, treatment, and prevention programs. Since its inception, CHAI has helped bring AIDS care and treatment to more than 415,000 people living with HIV/AIDS around the world.

World Bicycle Relief/CHAI Projects

Country: Rwanda
50 bikes and spares. $5,000.
Partners: CHAI, Partners In Health (Dr. Paul Farmer)

Bicycles to support home-based caregivers and medical staff reaching out to patients living in rural areas. Walking alone does not help caregivers reach patients consistently; and motor transportation is expensive, and often unreliable or non-existent. Bicycles extended the reach of care and travel times considerably.

Country: Kenya
50 bikes and spares. $3,800.
Partners: CHAI, El-Taller, Our Lady of Perpetual Support (OLPS)

The bicycles will be spread between six active projects focusing on community healthcare workers and OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) mentors. The care workers will bring assistance to patients in the field. The mentors will provide monitoring and psychological support to OVC.

Country: Tanzania
50 bikes and spares. $4,500.
Partners: CHAI, Ilula Lutheran Health Centre, Faraja Centre

Bicycles to support healthcare providers in seven rural areas accessed only by dirt roads and dirt paths. Due to the extensive needs, CHAI added additional funding to purchase more bikes.

Country: Mozambique
50 bikes and spares. $4,500.
Partner: CHAI, CUAMM-Doctors with Africa, CIC

Bicycles used in support of two healthcare initiatives in two different provinces: Moma (Nampula province), and Mopeia and Morrumbala (Zambezia). There will be 25 bikes delivered to each province. The healthcare is focused on education, prevention, and better management and oversight of existing care programs.

Country: Ethiopia
50 bikes and spares. $5,000.
Partners: CHAI, Amahara Regional Health Bureau and the Ethiopian Government

The bikes will be purchased for Health Extension Workers (HEWs). The HEWs are a critical component of the Ethiopian government's strategy to decentralize its healthcare system. Their main role is to teach and promote preventative measures at the village level (e.g., sanitation, AIDS education), and they will acquire new skills over time. The HEWs were selected by their communities and spent several months in training. There are two HEWs per Kebele (district), and they work from a Health Post. However, the populations they serve are widely dispersed and, therefore, they travel several kilometers per day to meet people in villages. The bicycles would improve their productivity and responsiveness, particularly when they are summoned to emergencies.

Country: Lesotho
50 bikes and spares. $5,000.
Partners: CHAI, Partners In Health (Dr. Paul Farmer), Lesotho Red Cross

Bicycles used in support of a recently launched nurse-based ARV program at different health centers in the Mafeteng district. This program will be introduced countrywide in the months to come. Each center has an expert patient who is a patient already on ARVs, prepared to encourage others to enroll in the program and assist them with adherence.
